British (?) fake tree in no man’s land, during WWI, an advanced outpost, built with steel and iron and then camouflaged. These trees were used as observation posts or to hide snipers.
Artists in the Royal Engineers selected a real tree on the battlefield, normally dead and/or bomb blasted, measuring and photographing it carefully. The photographs and sketches were then used to built a fake tree.
Finally, under the cover of night, the real tree was replaced by its replica.
