Imagine the Fresnel lens as a departing point to unfold a critique of Western epistemologies informed by optical technologies as military and colonial design. The projection of light and its Enlightenments are embedded in the violent imperial gestures of framing, grasping, comprehending, revealing, discovering and possessing. At the Westernmost tip of continental Europe, the lighthouse keeper, born of the war, inhabits that space between the dark zone and illumination. As counter-gesture, the film Sunstone seeks lines of flight towards the shadows through an upholding of a politics of opacity.

MANGROVE SCHOOL

We recently went to Guinea Bissau to research the conditions of the students in the guerrilla schools in the mangroves. Instead, we soon became ourselves the learners and the first lesson was how to walk. If you walk straight, placing your heels on the ground first, you promptly slip and fall in the dams of the flooded mangrove rice field or you get stuck in the mangrove mud. You need to lower your body, flex your knees and stick your toes vertically into the mud, extend your arms forwards in a conscious and present movement. In the mangrove school the learning happens with the whole body.

Filipa César é artista e realizadora. Interessa-se pelos aspectos ficcionais do documentário, nas fronteiras porosas entre o cinema e a sua recepção e pelas políticas e poéticas inerentes da imagem em movimento. Desde 2011, investiga o cinema militante dos Movimentos de Libertação Africana na Guiné Bissau como um laboratório de potencial resistência às epistemologias colonias atuais. O corpo de trabalho daí resultante compreende filmes, arquivos digitais, instalações, seminários, publicações e colaborações contínuas com artistas, teóricos e ativistas, em particular com Diana McCarty, Marinho de Pina, Olivier Marboeuf e Sana na N’Hada. Participou nos projetos de pesquisa Living Archive (2011-13) e Visionary Archive (2013-15) ambos organizados pelo Arsenal – Institut for Film and Video Art, Berlim e atualmente colabora no programa quadrienal “The New Alphabet” iniciado pela Haus der Kulturen der Welt em 2019. César estreou a sua primeira longa-metragem ensaio-filme Spell Reel na seção Forum da 67. Berlinale, é co-autora do filme Escola do Mangue estreado em 2022 no Festival Cinéma Du Réel em Paris. Desde 2023, é professora de Time Based Media e Performance na HfG, Karlsruhe.
