After WWI aircraft detection became increasingly important to warfare. Before radars acoustic amplifiers and mirrors with different designs were used to detect engine noises at greater distances, allowing more time to prepare a response.
Between wars the Japanese developed several models of these ‘War Tubas’, devices that received this nickname because of its shape.
